[1]A Manchester terrier shaped by ratting
The AKC describes a breed developed in Manchester, England, combining a terrier’s ratting instinct with a coursing hound’s streamlined outline.
[1]The Toy variety weighs no more than 12 pounds
The AKC standard sets the Toy variety at no more than 12 pounds. It differs from the Standard in size and ear options; only naturally erect ears are correct for the Toy. The standard states that size and ear options are the only differences between the two varieties.
[2]Jet black with sharply defined mahogany tan
The short, smooth, dense, glossy coat has sharply separated black and mahogany tan. AKC specifies small spots above the eyes and on cheeks, a throat V, chest rosettes and black toe pencilling. White is a serious fault; white patches or stripes at least half an inch long, or any colour other than black/tan, are disqualifying.
