[2]A flock-guarding sheepdog
The AKC standard calls for intelligence, courage, alertness and devotion in the Belgian Sheepdog. Along with guarding flocks, it is described as protective of people and property, vigilant with strangers and affectionate with familiar people.
[1]A balanced, square outline
The AKC standard describes a well-balanced, square dog combining elegance with strength. Ideal height is about 61–66 cm for males and 56–61 cm for females, with enough bone for balance but without bulk.
[1]The black-coated AKC entry
The coat has long, straight guard hairs and a dense undercoat, with longer furnishings around the neck, tail and hindquarters. The AKC Belgian Sheepdog standard requires a black ground colour and permits limited small white markings.
