A livestock guardian from Turkey

The UKC gives western Turkey as the Akbash’s origin and describes it as a livestock guardian that protects sheep from wolves and other predators. It credits David and Judy Nelson’s fieldwork from the 1970s and their imports as the foundation stock in the United States and Canada.

Long-legged with a deep chest

The body is long-legged, lean and muscular, with a deep chest and slightly more length than height. The UKC standard relates both the strength to challenge large predators and the speed and agility to pursue swift predators to its livestock-guardian role.

White coat in two lengths

Both medium and long coats are recognized; the long coat has a distinct ruff and more leg and tail feathering. The overall appearance must be white, with light biscuit or grey shading permitted around the ears or in the undercoat. This does not permit defined spots on the outer coat.
