[1]A fox-working terrier associated with John Russell
The breed traces to terriers developed by England’s Reverend John Russell for fox hunting in the mid-19th century. The AKC says it shares fox-working ancestry with the Parson Russell Terrier, but the two lines later diverged.
[1]A small body built to work underground
The standard height is 10 to 12 inches, and the dog is active and lithe. Its flexible body forms a slightly elongated rectangle, with a small compressible chest suited to narrow underground passages.
[2]A mostly white coat in three textures
The coat may be smooth, broken or rough, and the body is predominantly white with black and/or tan markings. The standard gives no preference to one coat type or marking pattern and emphasizes a balanced working-terrier build.
