The standard describes it as a protector of sheep and property, able to work in very low and very high temperatures. It is reserved with strangers, determined when guarding and loyal to its owner.
[1]A dense coat, usually black
The body is sturdy and slightly rectangular, with a dense, rough coat and undercoat. The standard accepts black or black-and-tan, with a small white chest mark permitted.
[1]Size and the extent of white markings
The 2026 FCI standard gives a height of 65–68 cm for males and 62–66 cm for females, with a 2 cm tolerance either way. Weight is 40–45 kg and 37–42 kg respectively. A white chest spot may be up to 5 cm across, and white on the toes must not reach the pastern. Hair at the withers averages 9.5 cm, with length varying by climate.
