Developed by Lucas and Enid Plummer after World War I

The UKC history says that after World War I, Major Sir Jocelyn Lucas bred Sealyhams and, concerned about the increasing size of show-bred dogs, crossed his hunting Sealyhams with Norfolk Terriers. With his partner, the Hon. Mrs. Enid Plummer, he developed a small working terrier.

A low-set terrier that works above and below ground

The UKC standard describes pack work that pushes game from thick cover and hunting vermin both above and below ground. The body is low-set and oblong rather than square, with a flexible spine and sturdy legs for going to ground. Desirable height is 11–13 inches for males and 10–12 inches for females.

A harsh double coat in white-based or dark colours

The coat has a harsh, straight outer layer and a thick, dense undercoat. The UKC standard lists a predominantly white pattern with brown, grizzle, badger-grey or black markings, as well as darker brown, black-and-tan or grizzle-and-tan coats with small white markings on the chest or feet.
