[1]A guardian of herds in the Carpathians
The FCI standard says the breed was selected from a population native to the Carpathian-Danubian region and used for centuries by Romanian shepherds to defend herds. Selection emphasized utility, and the first standard was written in 1934.
[1]Large yet agile and not heavy
The standard describes a relatively large, rectangular dog that remains agile and never heavy. It is a courageous, calm guardian, strongly attached to the herd and its handler.
[1]A wolf-gray double coat
The coat is harsh, dense, straight and double. The UKC standard describes pale fawn overlaid with black as wolf gray, often paler beneath, and permits white markings as long as they are not predominant.
