Xoloitzcuintle

Temperament
Alert, Loyal, Calm
[3]An ancient native dog of Mexico
The FCI gives Mexico as its origin and recounts its role in ceremonies in pre-Hispanic Mexico. The standard gives “Xoloitzcuintli” as the Nahuatl form and “Xoloitzcuintle” as the Spanish name.
[1]Two coat varieties, three sizes
The FCI standard recognises hairless and coated varieties, identical in conformation apart from coat and dentition. Both varieties are divided into standard, intermediate and miniature sizes.
[1]Skin and coat colours; dentition
The hairless variety has little or no body hair, while the coated variety has short, close-lying hair over the body. The standard allows several colours, including black and dark greys; it requires a full 42-tooth dentition for the coated variety and links the hairless gene with missing teeth in the hairless variety.
