[4]A Belgian stable ratter and cab guardian
The UKC standard places the breed in 15th-century Belgium and describes its early role as a stable ratter, later a guardian of horse-drawn cabs. It suggests that Pug, Affenpinscher and Ruby King Charles Spaniel crosses contributed in the early 19th century.
[1]Two coat types in the American standard
The AKC Brussels Griffon includes rough- and smooth-coated varieties. Its standard lists red, belge (black and reddish brown), black and tan, and black; the two varieties are treated as one breed that differs in coat.
[2]Three breed names in the European standard
Registry classification differs. The FCI names the red rough-coated Brussels Griffon, the black or black-and-tan rough-coated Belgian Griffon, and the smooth-coated Petit Brabançon, which may share the rough varieties’ colors, as separate breeds. These are registry distinctions, not just color variants.
