[1]Re-created from dogs preserved in its home region
The FCI standard suggests possible descent from ancient Gallic hounds and the grey dogs of Saint Louis. After disappearing from royal packs and apparently vanishing around the French Revolution, the breed was recreated about a century later from dogs retained in its home region.
[1]A scent hound used mainly for wild boar
Its main use is hunting wild boar, usually in a pack but also individually. The FCI classifies it as a scent hound and subjects it to working trials.
[1]A rough-coated hound built for sustained work
The FCI standard describes a robust, rustic medium-sized hound with a hard, tousled coat. It is built for sustained work rather than speed, and its somewhat sad expression should not be confused with fearfulness.
