[1]An ancient-origin account in the FCI standard
The FCI standard recounts a history in which ancient Egyptian hounds reached Italy along the Mediterranean with Phoenician traders and gave rise to the present Segugio. It also describes similar dogs in old sculptures and paintings.
[1]A scent hound for hare and wild boar
It is used especially to hunt hare and wild boar. The standard says it can work alone or in a pack across varied terrain, combining stamina and speed.
[1]A lean build with a short coat
The medium-sized, nearly square body has well-developed bone and muscle and a lean outline. The coat is short, in fawn shades or black-and-tan. FCI treats the rough-haired form under a separate standard.
[1]Standard height and weight
FCI height is 52–58 cm for males and 48–56 cm for females; weight is 18–28 kg. A height tolerance of 2 cm either way is allowed only for excellent dogs.
