[2]A hunting dog developed in Portugal
The Portuguese Podengo hunts using sharp scent together with sight and hearing. The UKC standard presents descent from ancient hunting dogs carried by Phoenician traders as a possible origin.
[1]Three sizes developed for different quarry
The Grande was developed for deer and wild boar, the Medio for chasing, flushing and retrieving rabbits, and the Pequeno for flushing rabbits from cover. Their size varieties reflect different quarry and hunting styles.
[1]Smooth short coat or rough coat with a beard
The coat is either short, dense and smooth, or harsher and medium-length with a beard. The UKC accepts yellow and fawn, solid, with white patches, or as patches on white. The small Pequeno also permits black or brown, solid or combined with white, although these colours are not preferred.
