[1]A tracking hound developed in the American South
The UKC standard places this among tracking hounds developed in the southern United States, with American and Virginia Foxhound ancestry and a probable Bloodhound contribution. In 1900 it became the first coonhound breed registered by UKC.
[1]Following scent and treeing game
It is a working hound that follows scent and trees game to alert the hunter. The standard calls for strength and the stamina to cover ground for long periods.
[1]A smooth short coat with tan on black
The coat is smooth and fine but thick enough for protection. It is predominantly deep black with tan trim, including small tan marks above the eyes. The UKC limits tan trim to no more than 10–15 percent of the body and permits a little white on the breast.
