[3]A cattle guardian from the Canary Islands
The FCI standard gives Tenerife and Gran Canaria as the breed’s place of origin and describes it as a guard dog used to protect cattle. It says the breed is believed to have developed from matings of the indigenous majorero and other molossoid dogs brought to the islands.
[1]Powerful yet agile build
This is a medium-sized molossoid dog with a body longer than its height, a rectilinear profile and a black mask. The standard describes a robust, well-proportioned body and notes its traditional use in handling cattle.
[1]Short coat and brindle among its colours
The short, coarse coat lies flat. The FCI standard describes no undercoat except that it may occur on the neck and back of the thighs. Brindle, fawn and black are accepted, with minimal white on the chest, neck or feet; fawn and brindle dogs have a black mask.
