[3]A hunting Spitz developed in Finland
The FCI gives Finland as the country of origin and cites the Komi dog, also called the Dog of Zyrians, as a likely ancestor. It was developed to hunt large game, holding it at bay and barking to mark its location. The FCI dates selective breeding to 1936, the first standard to 1945 and initial registrations to 1946.
[1]A sturdy medium build, slightly longer than tall
It is a medium-sized Spitz, only slightly longer than tall. The standard describes erect ears, a curled tail and a robust frame built for active work.
[1]A double coat, usually black with white
The outer coat is harsh and straight, with a soft, dense undercoat and longer hair on the neck, back and rear thighs. The FCI basic colour is black, which may be dull or tinged with brown, usually with clearly defined white on the head, neck, chest, belly and legs.
