Domestic-cat development

LOOF’s standard approved in 2009 describes Paul Casey’s 1970s project to develop a domestic cat resembling the small spotted wild felines he had seen in Tanzania, using crosses among domestic breeds. This is the history recorded by that source.

Appearance in the historical LOOF standard

The same standard describes a long, muscular, cylindrical body, a wedge-shaped head with prominent cheekbones, and rounded ear tips. Legs are medium in length with substantial bone and muscle; the medium-length tail is of similar thickness from base to tip.

Spots and short coat

The 2009 LOOF standard describes spots on the back and flanks and fine stripes from the crown to the shoulders. Hair is short and close lying on the face, neck, back and flanks, and may be slightly longer on the tail and abdomen. These are historical LOOF descriptions, not a current TICA standard.

TICA registration status

TICA’s rules dated 3 June 2026 list SP California Spangled as Registration Only (RE). The historical LOOF New Breed category and its account of decline belong to a different organization and date. The listing does not establish a present population count or Championship eligibility.
