A history distinct from the Šarplaninac

The UKC standard says Karst and Šar mountain shepherds were once grouped together as Illyrian Shepherds. In 1968 they were separated into the Karst Shepherd Dog and the Sarplaninac, which have remained distinct breeds.

A medium-sized guardian from the Karst region

The FCI lists Slovenia as its country of origin, while the UKC standard places the breed in the Karst Massif for several centuries. It is medium-sized and long-coated, robustly built and devoted to its handler as a guardian.

An iron-gray coat and black mask

The UKC coat is iron grey, darkest on the body and shading to light grey or sandy on the belly and legs, with a black mask spreading from the muzzle toward the skull. Body topcoat is at least four inches long, with abundant undercoat and a conspicuous mane around the neck.
