[1]A small hound developed from Slovak mountain dogs
The Tatra Hound is a small scent hound developed from dogs used for hunting in Slovakia’s mountains. The FCI standard traces it to smaller or differently colored Slovak Hound puppies, with early outcrosses used to broaden the breeding base.
[1]A rectangular build for scent work
Small and light yet strongly boned, it has a rectangular outline. Height to body length is about 1:1.25 in males and 1:1.35 in females. The FCI standard highlights persistent work, a strong sense of smell and orientation in the field.
[1]A short coat in black-and-tan or red
The coarse coat lies close, with shorter, softer hair on the head and limbs. The black-and-tan variety may have white on the chest, limbs and crown. The red variety ranges from light tan to deer red, with some black mixed in and a black muzzle mask tolerated.
[1]Height and a distinct breed record
FCI height is 38–42 cm for males and 36–40 cm for females. FCI records provisional recognition in 2026 under a breed standard separate from the Slovak Hound.
