A small French scent hound used chiefly on hare. Its own standard developed from one formerly shared with the larger basset, recognizing distinct proportions rather than a merely shortened Grand Basset.

Small and strong with a slightly elongated body, moderately long rough coat and drop ears with long hair. Size, ear length and overall proportions provide comparisons with the Grand Basset.
[1]Colour and comparisons
Colours include black-and-white, black-and-tan, fawn-and-white and tricolour with a black mantle, as well as dark overlay. Patch boundaries and the dark back covering distinguish patterns within similar colour combinations.
