[3]A companion developed in Leningrad
The AKC history account places the breed’s development in postwar Leningrad, now St. Petersburg. Starting with small dogs paired in the 1950s, breeders also used Maltese, Bolognese and Shih Tzu while selecting a consistent companion-dog type.
[1]A small, slightly elongated body
The AKC standard describes a sturdy, balanced small dog whose body is slightly longer than its height. The ideal weight is about 3–4 kg for either sex, and the tail curls over the back.
[2]Large curls and permitted colors
The coat is long, dense and soft, with a well-developed undercoat. Large curls are preferred, though a strongly wavy coat is also allowed; the AKC standard excludes solid white, spotted, parti-color and merle, while permitting small white markings on the toes and forechest.
