[1]A hound documented in the Apennines
The Appennine Hound is an Italian medium-sized scent hound. The FCI standard cites a description in an 1882 Italian hunting journal and presents it as a type preserved by people in mountain communities.
[1]A hunter focused on hare
It hunts mainly hare, as well as wild boar and other mammals. It can work alone, in pairs or in a pack, moving through mountain terrain.
[1]Two coat types within one breed
The Appennine Hound is medium-sized and suited to hunting in hills and mountains. The FCI standard recognizes short coats up to 2 cm and rough coats from 2 to 5 cm with a dense undercoat; it permits breeding between the two varieties. The rough coat must lie close to the body without forming curls or ringlets.
[1]Height, weight and four permitted colours
FCI gives a height of 44–50 cm for males and 42–48 cm for females, allowing 2 cm above or below for excellent specimens. Weight is 10–18 kg, with a body-length-to-height ratio of 11:10. Permitted colours are shades of fawn, black and tan, hare grey, and fawn with a black overlay; white is described at specified sites such as the limbs, chest, neck, forehead, muzzle and tail tip.
[1]Provisional recognition in the FCI
The FCI breed record gives 11 February 2026 as the date of provisional recognition. It places the breed among the medium-sized scent hounds in Group 6, subject to a working trial.
