A small spaniel with France and Belgium as its standard origin. Papillon is French for butterfly, referring to the large ears and their long fringes.

Coloured patches occur on a white ground. The standard considers white distribution on the body separately from head markings.

FCI includes erect-eared Papillon and drop-eared Phalene in one standard, and AKC Papillon also covers both ear types. Size and white-marking rules remain source-specific.
