[3]A terrier developed around Jerez
The FCI standard traces the breed to smooth Fox Terrier lines brought to the Jerez area in the mid-19th century and crossed with local dogs.
[1]A hunter of small vermin around farms and cellars
The standard describes selection for hunting rats and other vermin in ports, wine cellars, warehouses, stables and tanneries, as well as for rabbit and hare hunting.
[1]A white ground with visible markings
The very short, dense coat is predominantly pure white, with black patches mainly on the head and start of the neck, complemented by tan on the face, cheeks and above the eyes. The standard’s history links selection of white to visibility in dark cellars. The current standard disqualifies an all-white coat, unlisted colours, or long, curly or harsh hair.
