Yugoslavian Shepherd Dog - Sharplanina

Temperament
Even-tempered, Reliable, Devoted
[1]A dog named for the Shar Mountains
The FCI standard says the breed has long been kept in the southeastern mountains of former Yugoslavia and was named for the Shar Planina range where it was most common. It entered FCI records in 1939 as the Illyrian Shepherd Dog and received its present English name in 1957.
[1]A guardian of livestock
Its traditional role was protecting livestock from predators. The FCI standard says the breed’s origin remains disputed and only suggests that it may have reached Europe from Asia during prehistoric migrations.
[1]Strong bone and a long, coarse coat
This above-average-sized dog is well proportioned and heavily boned, with a thick, long and rather coarse coat. The standard describes it as steady, reliable and protective, but not snappy.
