Estrela Mountain Dog
Temperament
Alert, Intelligent, Brave
[3]Background and human relationship
A Portuguese guardian of sheep in the Serra da Estrela, accompanying flocks uphill as lowland pasture dried in summer. Its mountain history is documented, while the precise path of its ancient origins remains uncertain.
[1]Build and coat
A substantial mastiff-type dog with a balanced overall build. Comparing its guarding role with that of lighter flock-gathering dogs helps explain differences in working construction.
[1]Colour and comparisons
The consulted JKC account lists fawn, wolf-grey and yellow, self-coloured or with white markings. The mixture of warm and grey tones and the placement of white offer visual comparisons, with the source and version scope retained.
