Portuguese Water Dog
Temperament
Affectionate, Adventurous, Athletic
[3]Background and classification
A Portuguese coastal fishing companion, retrieving fish, nets and lines and carrying messages between boats and shore. Its swimming work differs from the bird-hunting role of water spaniels.
[1]Appearance and coat
Balanced and muscular, it shows the strength associated with repeated swimming. A traditional clip removes some body hair while retaining a plume at the tail tip, changing the visible outline.
[1]Coat and comparisons
Solid black, white and shades of brown occur, as do black-and-white and brown-and-white. Coat colour, nose and eyelid pigment, and the outline created by clipping are separate observations.
