[1]A working terrier line from northern England
The UKC says the Patterdale Terrier descends mainly from the black, smooth-coated Fell Terrier, developed in the harsh conditions of northern England. Fell Terriers controlled vermin that threatened sheep and were used to bolt quarry from dens.
[1]A compact, sturdy build for going to ground
The UKC standard describes a tough, active little terrier with the flexibility and endurance to follow quarry underground. Its stated height range is 10 to 15 inches at the withers.
[1]Three coat types and several colours
The UKC recognizes smooth, broken and rough coats, all with a short, dense undercoat. Listed colours include black, red, liver or chocolate, grizzle, black and tan, and bronze; some white on the chest or feet is also described.
