[3]An old German farm guardian
The FCI standard describes the Hovawart as an old German working dog and links its name to a farm or estate and a guardian. From 1922, similar farm dogs were developed as a breed with outcrosses including German Shepherd Dogs and Newfoundlands.
[1]A versatile medium-large worker
The Hovawart is a powerful, medium-large, longhaired dog whose body is slightly longer than its height. The standard describes a good-natured, even temperament, confidence, protectiveness and a good nose, with roles including companion, watch, guard, rescue and tracking work.
[1]Three coat-color varieties
The long coat is thick, slightly wavy and lies flat. The FCI standard recognizes black-and-gold, black and blond varieties; in black-and-gold dogs, distinct medium-blond markings sit on a black ground.
