A dog documented in Valencia

The FCI standard gives Spain’s Valencian Community as the origin and says similar local dogs were documented there from the last third of the 19th century. Its historical account also refers to early terrier imports from Great Britain.

Vermin hunting and an alert bark

The FCI standard lists water rats, rabbits and moles as traditional quarry, notes its use as a watchdog that warns by barking, and also records a current companion role.

A small, light frame and standard measurements

The FCI standard describes a small, light dog. It gives height ranges of 30–40 cm for males and 29–38 cm for females, with a 4–8 kg weight range for both sexes.

A short coat and common marked patterns

The coat is fine and no longer than 2 cm. The FCI standard says marked coats are more common than solid colours, with black-and-tan and white the most common marked pattern; solid cinnamon and black are also listed.
