[1]A hunting dog from European Russia
The FCI standard describes this as a Russian hunting breed from the European forest regions. It says Laikas from Arkhangelsk, Komi, Karelia and other areas were united under the modern breed name in 1947, and a purebred standard was approved in 1952.
[1]From small game to large game
The UKC standard describes it as the smallest of the three Laika breeds and an all-purpose hunter of small and large game. Squirrel hunting was its original main use; the standard also describes trailing and treeing squirrels and martens. The UKC distinguishes it from the closely related Karelian Bear Dog by its smaller size, lighter bone and squarer build.
[2]A double coat and a more detailed colour range
The UKC standard’s Color section lists black, grey or salt-and-pepper with white markings, including both a mainly coloured coat with white patches and a mainly white coat with coloured patches. Its General Appearance section describes black or dark grey with white.
