A breed history beginning with a stray

The UKC standard revised in 2013 recounts a small stray found near a church in Spartanburg, South Carolina, shortly after the start of the twentieth century. Alexander L. White took it home and, after noticing hunting ability, sent it to L. Whitaker Boykin for training as a turkey dog and waterfowl retriever.

Finding and retrieving birds on land and in water

UKC describes a sturdy, medium-sized working spaniel with instincts for flushing game from cover and retrieving it. Its standard highlights strong swimming ability and work in the field as well as water retrieving.

A body longer than tall and stated size ranges

The UKC standard calls for body length from shoulder to buttocks to exceed height at the shoulder. Height ranges are 15.5–18 inches for males and 14–16.5 inches for females. It describes a strong, straight, level back and a well-developed chest.

A brown coat and a small chest marking

UKC prefers a medium-length coat ranging from flat to moderately curly, while also accepting a short, straight coat. Its colour description is solid rich liver or dark chocolate, with a small white spot on the chest permitted.
