[1]A hound shaped from the Saintonge type
The FCI standard says the French White and Black Hound developed from the Saintonge type, whose origins are uncertain, and that its present form was influenced by Poitevin and Gascon-Saintongeois crosses in the late 19th century. A connection to 16th-century dogs is presented only as possible.
[1]A pack hound for big game
This is a large French scent hound used in packs for big game. The standard highlights its fine nose, diligence, seriousness and ringing voice, qualities valued in deer hunts.
[1]A balanced large hound
FCI calls for a balanced large hound, with shoulder-to-buttock body length equal to height at the withers. Heights are 65–72 cm for males and 62–68 cm for females, with a tolerance of 1 cm either way. The head is long, and the hanging ears reach at least the base of the nose when drawn forward.
[1]Black and white with defined tan markings
The short coat is firm and dense. FCI requires white and black, with a black mantle or varying black patches and possible black or bluish speckling. Tan freckles are permitted only on the limbs, while pale tan is described above the eyes, on the cheeks, below the eyes and ears, and at the tail base. The white-and-black name alone does not make a dog with tan a different breed.
