Developed from German Bracken

The FCI standard traces the breed to the tricolour Sauerländer Holzbracke, a local variety of Westphalian Bracke, blended with local Steinbracken. The resulting type has been called Deutsche Bracke since 1900.

A high-legged, light yet strong build

It is a high-legged hunting dog, light and elegant yet strongly built. The FCI height range is 40–53 cm, with moderate departures permitted. The chest reaches below the elbows and the abdomen is slightly tucked up.

A hard coat and three-colour markings

The coat is long for a short-haired dog, very dense and hard, almost bristly. Red to yellow is combined with a black saddle or blanket and white Bracken markings: a continuous blaze, white muzzle and neck ring, chest, legs and tail tip.

Long hanging ears and a bushy tail

The rounded ears hang close to the head and are described as about 14 cm long and 9 cm broad. Long bushy hair protects the tail against tree trunks and branches; the tail tapers towards its tip.
