A French hound revived in the late 19th century

The breed originated in France. The FCI standard says hunters in the west revived it at the end of the 19th century, after which it developed while preserving the qualities of the southern hound.

[1]

A scent hound for rabbits and hares

It is used for hunting with a gun and sometimes for coursing. It works alone or in a pack, with rabbits and hares as preferred quarry; the standard notes its fine nose, ringing voice and agility.

Mottled coat that appears slate blue

The short, dense coat is mottled black and white, creating a slate-blue effect. Its long, fine ears curl inward and reach beyond the nose; tan markings appear above the eyes, on the cheeks and on the legs. The blue appearance comes from the black-and-white mottling rather than a solid blue coat.

[1]

A low body and ears extending beyond the nose

FCI gives the same height range of 34–38 cm for both sexes, with a height-to-body-length ratio of about 5:8. The chest reaches below the elbows, the back is long, and the loin is short and well coupled. Its low body and long ears should be considered together with the black-and-white mottling and tan points when distinguishing it from other bassets.
