[2]A working dog preserved in the American South
According to the UKC standard, the Bulldog's working ancestors in England drove and caught cattle and guarded property. They came with immigrants to the American South and served farmers and ranchers, but the breed was close to extinction by the end of World War II; John D. Johnson, Alan Scott and others worked to revive it.
[1]Scott and Johnson types
The UKC standard describes the sleeker, performance-oriented Scott type and the heavier, larger-headed Johnson type. Many modern dogs combine traits from both lines, and the standard treats these as types within the American Bulldog rather than separate breeds.
[1]A short coat with varied colors and patterns
The UKC standard pairs a strongly muscled, athletic build with a short, close coat. A broad range of colors and patterns is accepted, but solid black or blue, merle, tricolor and a full black mask are excluded; less than 10% white is listed as a serious fault.
