A hound developed in Tyrol

The FCI standard’s historical summary traces the Tyrolean Hound to ancient Celtic hounds. It says selective breeding from certain old Bracke strains began in Tyrol around 1860 and a standard was drawn up in 1896.

A scent hound for forests and mountains

This medium-sized scenthound is described as working in forests and mountains, hunting hare and fox and tracking wounded game. The UKC standard describes a muscular, sinewy build and a steady, passionate, independent hunting style.

A double coat in red or black and tan

The coat is thick and double, with a coarse rather than fine undercoat. The FCI standard allows red, black and tan, or tricolour, with a white neck stripe and white on the chest, feet or legs. Lack of white is not a fault, while distinctly pied colouring is disqualifying. Black-and-tan dogs may have tan points above the eyes.
