[1]A history rooted in Bulldog–Terrier crosses
The UKC standard traces the breed to nineteenth-century Bulldog–Terrier crosses in England, Ireland and Scotland, brought to the United States by immigrants. It says farmers and ranchers used the dogs for catching semi-wild cattle and hogs, hunting, moving livestock and companionship.
[1]A muscular, athletic build rather than sheer size
The UKC standard calls for a medium-sized, solidly built dog with clear musculature and an athletic outline. The body is only slightly longer than the dog is tall, and the standard says quality should not be sacrificed for size.
[1]A short smooth coat in many colours
The glossy, short coat lies close and feels moderately stiff. The UKC standard accepts a broad range of colours and patterns, while listing merle and albinism as disqualifications.
