[3]Background and human relationship
An old French dog associated with big-game hunting and guarding homes and livestock, shown under its present name in Paris in 1863. Dogue de Bordeaux is another name.
[1]Build and coat
A broad head, short face and strongly muscled body give a substantial outline. Deep chest and relatively low stature distinguish its proportions from taller large breeds.
[1]Colour and comparisons
Fawn ranges from mahogany to Isabella, with limited white on chest and toes. Black-masked, brown-masked and unmasked forms differ in nose and eye-rim pigment as well as facial colour.
