An American working dog with uncertain origins

The UKC standard says the Black Mouth Cur’s origin is uncertain, noting claims that it came from the mountains of Tennessee and others that place it in Mississippi. Early American settlers used these dogs as all-purpose workers and took them west as hunters and family guardians.

A medium tree dog built to work rough ground

The UKC standard describes a powerful, agile, medium-sized tree dog with a square or slightly longer body. It uses sight, hearing and scent to find game and trees it during the hunt. The standard says scars should neither be penalized nor treated as proof of working ability.

A short coat in red, yellow, fawn, black and more

The short, dense coat lies close. The UKC standard allows red, yellow, fawn, black, brown, buckskin and brindle, with or without a black muzzle or mask. Small amounts of white may occur under the chin, around the nose, on the neck, chest, legs and tail tip, totalling no more than 10 percent of the body. Spotted, mottled, merle and white-collar patterns are excluded; albinism is disqualifying.
