A Uruguayan breed with uncertain origins

The FCI standard describes the origin as uncertain, while stating that the breed is known to descend from dogs brought by Spanish and Portuguese conquerors. Dogs left in the country were shaped by natural selection and later used for herding and estate guarding.

Used for herding, big-game hunting and guarding

The FCI lists herding, big-game hunting and guarding as its uses. It is a medium-sized dogue-type dog with good bone and muscle, combining strength and compactness with agility.

Short coat in brindle and fawn shades

The short, smooth, close-lying coat has an undercoat. FCI permits brindle, all fawn shades, bluish brindle and bluish fawn, with or without a mask; fawn may have black shading. White is limited to the under-jaw, throat, forechest, abdomen and lower legs, not above the wrist in front or halfway up the metatarsus behind.
