[1]A scent hound selected in Brazil
The FCI standard says Brazilian breeder Osvaldo Aranha Filho selected the breed from the American Foxhound to suit Brazilian climate and working traits. It describes it as evolving from the old Brazilian Howler. It also records a major breeding setback from the 1970s, followed by resumption in 2000.
[1]A hound that flushes and corners game
Its stated use is flushing and cornering game. It can scent-hunt alone, in pairs, small groups or packs, and the standard notes stamina for long work over rough, hot terrain.
[1]Long ears and a short, close coat
It is a large, strong hound with long, hanging ears. The coat is short, smooth and close; the standard lists black-and-white mottling that appears slate blue, plus bi-color and tri-color patterns.
