A dog from the Frisian region of the Netherlands

The Stabijhoun originates in the Frisian forest area of the Netherlands. Its FCI standard describes links to the Drentsche Patrijshond and Heidewachtel, and records that after early-20th-century crossbreeding with the Wetterhoun, efforts to re-establish both breeds began in 1938.

A pointer with a history of farm work

The FCI standard lists its utilization as a pointing dog and calls it an all-round hunter with a reputation for catching moles and polecats. It also records that it kept the yard free of mice and rats, and that the formerly common larger type pulled milk carts.

A medium coat in black-and-white or brown-and-white

The medium-length body coat is straight, with bushy hair on the chest, collar, backs of the legs and tail. Black or brown with white markings, and black or brown roan, are accepted. The white may have roaning or ticking; tan markings and tricolour are disqualifying.

Ideal height and weight

The ideal FCI height is 50–53 cm for males and 48–50 cm for females, with 2 cm allowed either side. Weight is 22–27 kg and 18–23 kg respectively. Breed type matters more than exact measurements.
