[3]A hunting strain of the English Setter
The UKC account says that, in the latter half of the 19th century, R. L. Purcell Llewellin obtained dogs from Laverack and made selective crosses focused on hunting. Field setters are still commonly called Llewellin setters, while show dogs are more often called Laverack setters.
[1]Field-type label and build
The UKC account uses Llewellin for the field type of English Setter. The UKC English Setter standard says field types are often smaller, lighter-boned, and shorter-coated than show types.
[2]Flat coat and feathering
The UKC English Setter standard calls for a flat coat without curl, neither soft nor woolly, with moderate feathering on the ears, chest, belly, underside of the thighs, backs of the legs and tail.
[2]Fine colored flecks on white
The same UKC standard lists blue belton, orange, lemon, liver and tricolor on white. Dogs without heavy patches on the body but flecked all over are preferred.
