A smaller hound developed for enclosed hunting grounds

The FCI standard says smaller, shorter-legged Swiss hounds were selected and crossed after medium-sized Swiss Hounds proved too fast for enclosed hunting grounds. They are scent hounds that follow game while giving voice and can work independently.

A rectangular body and long folded ears

The FCI standard describes a smaller version of the medium-sized Swiss Hound, with a moderately long, rectangular body. The very long ears are low-set, folded and pendulous. Height is 35–43 cm for males and 33–40 cm for females, with a tolerance of 2 cm either way.

Three coat types and four regional colour patterns

The standard lists short, close-fitting smooth hair; harsh rough hair with a slight beard; and a double coat with dense undercoat and straight guard hair. Regional colours are Bernese black and white with tan, Jura black and tan, Lucerne blue-speckled with a black mantle, and Schwyz white with an orange-red mantle. Mixtures of these colours are also allowed.
