A molosser type linked to Mediterranean port guards

The FCI standard recounts large guard dogs becoming established in Iberian coastal ports and settlements, where they were also used for hunting and bullfighting. It says the mastiff type reached the Balearic Islands around the 13th century and was later crossed with British guard dogs.

A medium-sized, powerful guardian

The FCI classifies it as a Spanish watch and guard dog. It is a medium-sized, somewhat elongated and powerful molosser with a large, broad head; males have noticeably larger heads than females.

Short rough coat in brindle and other colors

The coat is short and rough to the touch. Brindle, fawn and black are accepted in that order of preference. White is permitted on the front feet, chest and muzzle up to 30% of the whole coat, and a black mask is allowed.
