[1]A guardian of sheep and goats in northeast Portugal
The FCI standard places the breed in the Trás-os-Montes highlands of Portugal and describes guarding sheep and goats against wolves. It links development to seasonal pastoral routes and mountain conditions.
[1]A large, nearly square build
FCI describes a large, powerful dog with height and body length almost equal. Its standard gives males as 75–85 cm and 60–75 kg, and females as 68–78 cm and 50–60 kg, with males noticeably taller and bulkier.
[1]A dense medium-length coat with patterned color
The coat is dense, medium in length and double. White with black, yellow, fawn or wolf-grey markings is common; solid fawn, yellow or wolf-grey, brindled or not, is also described. FCI lists solid black and solid white as severe faults.
