[1]A large scenthound associated with Gascony
The FCI classifies this French breed among large scenthounds. Its historical account places the dogs in the packs of Gaston Febus, Count of Foix, in the fourteenth century, and describes their spread through southern France, particularly Gascony.
[1]A hound for large game and hare
The FCI standard describes hunting large game with a gun, sometimes coursing it, as well as hunting hare. The dog may hunt in a pack or track individually; the standard notes its very fine nose and deep, sonorous howling voice.
[1]Blue appearance from black-and-white mottling
The coat is short, thick and dense. Fine black-and-white mottling creates a slate-blue effect, with or without larger black patches. The FCI standard also describes tan above the eyes and traces of tan on the cheeks, lips, inner ears, legs and beneath the tail.
