Developed in Finland

The FCI standard says development advanced after the Finnish Kennel Club was founded in 1889 and the first standard was written in 1932. Crosses in the early 20th century also helped form the present stock.

Tracks hare and fox with a ringing voice

It is a scent hound for hare and fox. The standard says it hunts eagerly even in difficult conditions, works independently on the trail and follows quarry with a resonant bark.

Tricolor with a black mantle

The medium-sized body is longer than it is tall and strongly built without being heavy. The coat has a dense short undercoat and a medium-length, straight, rather harsh outer coat; black mantle, tan and white markings make up the tricolor pattern.

Height ranges and preferred heights

The FCI height range is 55–61 cm for males and 52–58 cm for females. Within it, preferred heights are 57–59 cm and 54–56 cm respectively. Body length to height is about 1.1 to 1, and chest depth is about half the height at the withers.
