[2]Its origin remains a hypothesis
The UKC standard says Dr. I. Lehr Brisbin documented free-ranging dogs in natural habitats of the southeastern United States in the 1970s. It describes support for the hypothesis that they descend from early dogs crossing the Bering land bridge, but says more research is needed to establish their origin.
[1]A lean, medium-sized dog
The UKC standard describes a lean, medium-sized dog with a rectangular body and a distinct waist. The ears are usually upright, and the tail tip forms a fishhook. Tail carriage varies with mood and movement: it may rise when alert or be carried down while gaiting.
[1]Ginger shades are common
Ginger is the most common color, ranging from reddish ginger to straw, pale yellow or buff. The standard also permits black, black and tan, and piebald coats.
[1]Size guidelines and seasonal coat changes
The UKC standard gives a general height range of 18–24 inches, about 46–61 cm, and an approximate weight of 35–50 pounds, about 16–23 kg, emphasizing type and balance over size alone. Winter coats and coats in colder climates may be heavier than summer coats. Short hair on the head, ears and forelegs contrasts with longer guard hairs on the neck, withers and back.
