[3]Three sizes and two coats
FCI defines Small, Medium and Large sizes, each with a short smooth or long wire coat. Heights are 20–30, 40–54 and 55–70 cm respectively. Neither coat has an undercoat, and the wire coat forms a beard.
[1]Hunting work varies by size
The standard assigns big-game hunting to the large variety, rabbit hunting alone or in packs to the medium variety, and searching for rabbits in holes and rocks to the small variety. It also describes the breed as a watchdog and companion.
[1]A primitive hunting dog adapted to Portugal
The FCI standard describes the breed as a primitive dog that may descend from ancient dogs brought to the Iberian Peninsula, with later influences also noted. It says the small variety was selected from the 15th century as a ratter aboard Portuguese ships.
[1]Colour rules differ by size
FCI permits yellow and fawn in light to dark shades, with or without white or as patches on white. Black and brown, with or without white or as patches on white, are accepted but not preferred only in the Small variety.
